  • Fixed a bug where Google search suggestions stopped working.
  • Fixed a bug where you could not use certain characters (like &) in search queries.

Monocle 1.5.3 (56)

September 19, 2009

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug where Google search results stopped working (again).

Other changes

  • The default (out of the box) lineup of engines have been brought up to date. Windows Live is replaced with Bing and YouTube is added. Note that if you've edited your engines in any way, these changes won't affect you; they're simply the default lineup that you get from a blank slate. If you want the YouTube or Bing engines, you can easily add them manually.
  • The items for Google search results and query suggestions in the search help list now carries the new Google favicon.

Monocle 1.5.1 (53)

Ready for Tiger, too (whoops!)

  • Fixed a bug where you couldn't bring up the sheet to add engines on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
  • Fixed a bug where you couldn't enable/disable individual suggestion/result sources on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

Monocle 1.5 (52)

January 21, 2008

Suggestions

  • Monocle 1.5 now has query suggestions and preliminary results. Query suggestions are simply autocomplete suggestions for the text query, and are fetched through Google Suggest. Preliminary results are the first few results off of Google. Both are displayed in a list just below the search panel as soon as you start typing.
  • Every type of suggestions and results can be turned off individually in the preferences, and rearranged to be in a different order. You can also set a different rule for each search engine - for example, disabling Google results on Wikipedia.
  • Suggestions and results load incrementally. Even though results take slightly longer to load in than suggestions, you get the suggestions right away.
  • Plugins to add support for other suggestion/result providers are supported - for more information, see the Headers folder inside Monocle's bundle, and please let us know if you create something interesting.

Ready for Leopard

  • The menu bar icon is drawn slightly sunken to fit in with other menu bar icons.
  • There are a bunch of new search panel backgrounds for Leopard, and some old ones have been removed. The new default is Leopard Pale, which mimics Leopard windows that are in the background.
  • Monocle's search window now shows up in all Spaces, just like the menu bar.
  • When adding engines, "favicons" from web sites are now received when using Safari 3 on Tiger or Leopard.
  • Everything in Monocle is resolution-independent. If you try to use a higher resolution right now, it won't look too good since the system itself is not fully primed for higher resolutions yet. But when it is, Monocle will be ready.

Tweaks

  • The way you add an engine has changed slightly. You still perform a test search to add the engine, but all prospective engines end up in a list at the bottom of the sheet and will be added when you close the sheet, and you can remove extraneous engines detected sometimes.
  • The search panel's appearence has been tweaked. It now doesn't have rounded corners, and the application menu arrow on the right is slightly more prominent. (You can also tab to it and hit space to unfold it just by using the keyboard.)
  • The preferences have been rearranged - in particular, the engines tab is now more straightforward and allows editing of colors and icons without bringing up an edit sheet.
  • There's now a preference for if you want to empty the search field between searches.
  • Monocle also works better with Exposé, where it will fade out when entering "Show All Windows" mode.

Tremendous thanks to the 1.5 beta testers.
